Packers 34 Lions 12
« on: November 26, 2009, 04:34:46 PM »
The Packers might have lost defensive players Al Harris and Aaron Kampman for the season, but on this day they have to be thankful they still have Charles Woodson. The Green Bay cornerback had a forced fumble, two of Green Bay's four interceptions,  including one that he returned for a touchdown, as the Packers rumbled past the Lions, 34-12, at Ford Field on Thursday. Donald Driver also had seven catches for 142 yards and a touchdown.

Solid team win today. Tough playing three games in twelve days, and we won all three of them. Can't complain about that. Now we've got a few extra days to prepare for the Ravens and get healthy.

Yes, a good solid win.  While the Lions aren't the best test I'm a lot happier with the play calling of late and the O line is certainly showing improvement.  Woodson was awesome and I really can't say enough about Rodgers.  We and the Packers are damned fortunate to jump from a talent like Favre to a talent like Rodgers without all the riff raff most teams must endure.  Rodgers may never break many of Favre's records but still may go down as the better quarterback overall.

Baltimore, the next "must win" for the Pack.  They can do it.   :)

Rodgers, Driver, and the offensive line, when both Clifton & Tauscher were on the field. Excellent play.

Charles Woodson. Defensive player of the year in the NFL? It could happen. Great game.

Lousy play? Bush. He is totally inept. We'd be better off playing 10 guys on defense to keep him off the field. He kept leaving his man, then watched as the passes sailed over him for big gains.

Special teams. They weren't too good the first half. At halftime, McCarthy told them to "step it up." They did. They were totally worthless from halftime on.

Play calling? Fairly good until we ended up backed up by our own goal line. Talk about a lack of skill in calling plays that can bust you out of there. Totally inadequate.

We had to beat the Lions, and did. Good individual play, and the offensive line... early on.

That was a fun game to watch. I found myself wanting the Packers offense to either not convert on third down or score a touchdown just so the defense would be on the field more. Clay Matthews and Charles Woodson are both so fun to watch.

Good win. Still concerns though. Penalties STIL!!  :D They did not look good the first half, which again is concerning they can't put together a complete game. Woodson was a monster again, but he was freed up by the fact CJ was clearly less than 100%.

If we faced a team with healthy WR's would it have turned out the same? Actually with the exception of Bush I think so. Williams really stepped up today. Kudos to him. Bush should be the one inactive next week, lets see what Bell and Ford have to offer. Got to see some great plays by Raji as well.

WTF is up with not being able to score? Until late in the third quarter the offense was great between the 20's then nothing. Was it play calling? Was it mistakes? I don't know but not being able to punch it in regularly against DET for almost 3 quarters of a game is worrying.

Crosby. MM needs to really work with him. In the NFL today 46 yarders should be no problem if you want to be a playoff team. May be time to look for a new K.

I think you saw a taste of what DET could be with a few more players on DEF. They kept this offense to 13 points until 6:38 left in the third.

Emotionally/mentally this was a huge win. But sorry for the partial downer, but not real convincing despite the score. GB should have put this game away by halftime and couldn't. Good teams find a way to win when they play crappy coming out of the gate though. And GB found a way to win, so I have to give them that.

Game balls: Williams for stepping up, Woodson for being a monster....

GB has a tough stretch coming up with BAL, CHI, PIT. This will really prove what GB is about this year. They passed the test against DAL so things look hopeful. Need 3 wins in the next 5 to assure a WC, 9-7 may do it with some luck.

I have to say that the entire defense stepped up and played great. No doubt about Woodson, Matthews, and Collins, but Barnett and Hawk seemed to be in all every tackle. They combined to have 20 tackles between the two of them. Woodson for DPOY!!!!!! Matthews for DROY!!!!

Matthews should definitely be in the mix for DROY.... If it weren't for teh fact Byrd up in BUF is leading teh nFl in INT's he'd be a shoo in.

I still think it should go to Matthews....

Gotta love the fact that 3 different GB players had INT's yesterday.

In all respect to the guys calling the game and Driver,  Woodson should have got the award at the end  :D

My game impressions:

*Charles Woodson is one of the best players I'll ever have the pleasure of watching in a Packer uniform. A sack, two picks, a forced fumble, a defensive TD, and matching up over one of the better receivers in the NFL all day in Harris' absence. If you weren't on it before, get on the bandwagon for Woodson as defensive POY. He's that good.

*Aaron Rodgers is something to watch. I realize today's game was against an awful Lions secondary, but the regularity with which he puts up 100+ QB ratings in games is frightening. The ball is coming out faster when it needs to now, and he seems to have been given much more leeway to make changes at the line. When he has time, I have no qualms mentioning him with the best QBs in the league. Just spot on all day.

*The offensive line seems to have turned the corner a bit. All we needed was for them to be average, and we seem to be that in the last three weeks. Fewer penalties, fewer quick pressures on Rodgers. Keep improving.

*It will be interesting to see what we do with a better offense, but Brad Jones seems to have jumped right back in and taken over for Kampman at that OLB spot. He won't provide the same pressure, but he has a good motor and is better in coverage. Bush got beat a few times. It will be interesting to see if he continues to be the man in nickel or if Ford or this new signing show enough to take over.

*Donald Driver has been a pleasure to watch as a Packer fan for all these years. He turns in another memorable performance today. Congratulations on the "Golden Gobbler" or whatever it's called nowadays.

*Jordy Nelson, despite the fumble on the opening kickoff, deserves mention for being our best blocking WR by a large margin. We run those bubble screens and pitch plays to his side, and he always seals the block.

*Great games from Barnett and Hawk. Barnett shows no lingering effects from the injury and gets better every week, and Hawk is playing with more edge than I've ever seen him do in a Packer uniform.

*Special teams remains abysmal. We don't know the meaning of contain on ANY return, and I'm frightened anytime we put a kick in the air. Crosby misses another. What's his deal? MUST get this under control if we have playoff dreams.

*Great to see Grant run with authority all day. He seems to have a burst that was lacking all of last year with the injury.

*The numbers won't show it today, but the Lions have a player in Stafford. He makes some big time throws.

*Nice to finally see him on the board this year, but Donald Lee needs to stop dropping the ball.

*Plays of the game:

Blocking, throw, and catch on the deep ball to Driver. Collins' interception. Any impact play by Charles Woodson. Hustle sack by Matthews on the last play of the half.

There's still things to fix on this team, but the offensive line and presnap penalties seem to have come around. Next is special teams issues. We stand at 7-4, already one more win than we had all of last season, with 5 to play. We have 11 days to get healthy and game plan before a home matchup on a national stage with the Ravens.
